SPOTLIGHT ON UNITED STATES: CORPORATIONS

Fossil fuels corporations have some of the strongest influences on U.S. governmental policies.

They are known for lobbying against climate change policies, spreading climate change denial, and being some of the top emitters of greenhouse gases.

They deny climate change mostly due to the damaging losses faced

if policies to tackle climate change are put in place.

ExxonMobil, American multinational oil and gas corporation

  • ExxonMobil is a prominent lobbyist for climate change denial.

  • It founded the Global Climate Coalition, which was a group of international corporations who lobbied against reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and disseminated climate change denial to the public.

  • It has funded over 20 million USD to think tanks who deny climate change, in efforts that successfully contributed to the United States government's failure to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.

  • It is currently under investigations for decades of playing down the effects of fossil fuels on climate change and deliberately misleading the public and their shareholders.

The Koch Brothers, owners of Koch Industries, American multinational corporation which manufactures, refines and distributes petroleum

  • Charles and David Koch, owners of 84% of Koch industries, are known to be fervent climate change deniers.

    • This is because policies to tackle climate change directly threaten Koch Industries' profits.

    • The oil corporation, which is responsible for 25% of crude oil sands (sandstones saturated with petroleum) imported into the U.S., generates 110 billion USD in revenue annually.

  • A study by the Environmental Protection Agency in America shows that Koch Industries is a major contributor of carbon dioxide emissions

    • Their oil refineries emit 24 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, similar to the amount from 5 million cars.

  • They have heavy political involvement.

    • From 1986 to 2017, they have funded 127 million USD to support climate denial groups in efforts to derail policies to tackle climate change.

    • This includes influencing Congress members to oppose policies for climate change, and funding 1 million USD to oppose a landmark global warming law in California.

  • They are known for heavily funding Republican candidates who lobby against policies to tackle climate change.

    • In 2008, when the Congress ramped up legislative efforts to regulate greenhouse gas emissions, the Koch Brothers funded the No Climate Tax pledge (http://www.noclimatetax.com/) which has extensively obstructed climate change policies and gained traction amongst politicians.

    • 411 current office holders have signed the pledge.
